How Long Does an ALS Certificate Last in Australia

How Long Does an ALS Certificate Last in Australia?

How Long Does an ALS Certificate Last in Australia?

Four years. That is the precise answer, and it applies to both levels. The Australian Resuscitation Council states that ALS 1 and ALS 2 provider certificates are valid for four years.

The detail that matters is when those four years start and what you have to do before they run out. The clock starts on the last day of your original course, and the renewal pathway open to you depends entirely on whether your certificate is still current on the day of your next course.

When the Four Years Actually Start

According to the Australian Resuscitation Council, certification for its advanced life support courses is valid for up to four years, and recertification courses are available at ARC course centres. The four year period runs from the last day of your original course.

That is a more precise starting point than most people assume, and the differences are small but they matter.

  • Not the day you enrolled or paid.
  • Not the day the certificate arrived in your inbox, which can be some weeks later.
  • Not the first day of a two day ALS 2 course. It is the second day, the day you finished.

A course that finished on 14 March 2023 produces a certificate that is no longer current after 14 March 2027. Your certificate is the authoritative record, so read the date printed on it rather than working from a diary entry or a rough memory of the year.

ALS 1 Validity and How You Renew It

An ARC ALS 1 provider certificate lasts four years. ALS 1 is the one day course covering recognition and management of the deteriorating patient, high quality CPR, safe defibrillation and clear handover.

The ARC recertification guidance states that to recertify ALS 1 you need to undertake another ALS 1 course. There is no separate shortened pathway equivalent to the ALS 2 one day recertification, so plan for the full course again when your four years are up.

ALS 2 Validity and How You Renew It

An ARC ALS 2 provider certificate also lasts four years. ALS 2 is the two day course for clinicians expected to lead a resuscitation, covering rhythm recognition, manual defibrillation, arrest pharmacology, reversible causes, special circumstances and team leadership.

The ARC gives you two ways to recertify at ALS 2 level. You can complete the one day ALS 2 Recertification course, or you can complete the full two day ALS 2 course again. Both certify you for a further four years.

The Condition on the One Day Pathway

The one day recertification course is only open to candidates who hold a current ARC ALS 2 certificate, within four years of the issue date. Course centres are required to verify certificate status before accepting a registration.

The practical consequence catches people out every year. The recertification must be completed before your existing certificate expires. Being current on the day you book is not enough if your certificate lapses before the course date arrives. If that happens, the only remaining option is the full two day course.

Why Four Years and Not Longer

Two things sit behind the period. The first is the evidence base itself. Resuscitation guidelines in Australia and New Zealand are published by ANZCOR, the Australian and New Zealand Committee on Resuscitation, which is the partnership between the Australian Resuscitation Council and the New Zealand Resuscitation Council. Those guidelines are reviewed and updated as new evidence emerges, so a certificate issued several years ago may reflect superseded practice.

The second is skill decay. Advanced life support is a practical, time pressured, team based skill set, and the parts that fade fastest are the ones that matter most under pressure. A fixed renewal cycle brings clinicians back into a simulated arrest at regular intervals, which is difficult to replicate any other way.

Certificate Validity Is Not the Same as Your Employer’s Requirement

This distinction causes a lot of confusion, so it is worth stating plainly. Four years is how long the certificate itself remains current. It is not a guarantee that your employer, your college or your credentialing committee will be satisfied with a four year cycle.

The ARC notes that its advanced life support courses are recognised for continuing professional development by many colleges and organisations, and that recognition systems vary between professional colleges, states and individual organisations. Some roles carry shorter or additional requirements. Two clinicians in the same hospital can face different obligations depending on their college and their scope of practice.

Check your certificate date and your credentialing requirements as two separate questions, and confirm the current position with your own college or professional body rather than assuming the four year period covers everything.

How ALS Validity Compares With CPR and First Aid

People often arrive at this question because they hold several certificates on different cycles. It helps to see them side by side.

Is My Australian ALS Certificate Recognised Overseas?

Yes, and the four year period travels with it. Australian adult advanced life support courses are co-badged, so ARC credentials are cross-recognised by the Resuscitation Council UK, the New Zealand Resuscitation Council and the European Resuscitation Council. Certificates issued by those councils are recognised by the ARC in return, because the UK and European councils use the same evidence based teaching material, programme and assessment processes.

If you are certified overseas and want to recertify in Australia, send the course centre a copy of your certificate before booking so they can confirm your eligibility rather than assume it.

Check the Certificate Is Actually an ARC Certificate

A four year validity period only means something if the certificate came from the genuine course. The ARC specifically cautions that some providers offer alternative courses it does not endorse, and that those courses may not meet credentialing requirements. The council publishes current course dates and approved course centres by state and territory, which is the quickest way to confirm a provider before you book.

How to Find Your Own Expiry Date in Two Minutes

  • Find the certificate, whether it is a paper copy, a scan, or an email attachment from the course centre.
  • Read the date of the last day of the course, then add four years.
  • If you cannot find the certificate, contact the course centre that issued it and ask for a copy.
  • Put the expiry date in your calendar with a reminder six months before, which is enough lead time to book a recertification course comfortably rather than in a rush.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long does an ALS certificate last in Australia?

Four years. The Australian Resuscitation Council states that ALS 1 and ALS 2 provider certificates are valid for four years, and the four years run from the last day of your original course rather than from the day the certificate was issued to you.

Q: Is ALS 1 validity different from ALS 2 validity?

No, both last four years. What differs is the renewal pathway. The ARC states that to recertify ALS 1 you undertake another ALS 1 course, while ALS 2 can be recertified either through the one day ALS 2 Recertification course or by completing the full two day ALS 2 course.

Q: Does my certificate expire on the anniversary of the course start date?

The four years run from the last day of your original course, which for a two day ALS 2 course means the second day. Check the date printed on your certificate rather than working from memory, because that date decides which renewal options are open to you.

Q: What happens when my ALS 2 certificate expires?

Once it lapses, the one day recertification course is no longer available to you. The ARC allows no leniency on the four year rule, and course centres are required to verify certificate status before accepting a registration. Recertifying then means completing the full two day ALS 2 course.

Q: Is an Australian ALS certificate recognised overseas?

Australian adult advanced life support courses are co-badged, so ARC credentials are cross recognised by the Resuscitation Council UK, the New Zealand Resuscitation Council and the European Resuscitation Council, and certificates from those councils are recognised by the ARC in return. The four year validity period applies in the same way.

Q: Does my employer have to accept the four year period?

Four years is the validity of the certificate itself. Employers, professional colleges and credentialing committees can set shorter or additional requirements for particular roles, and those requirements vary by employer, college, state and role. Check your own credentialing policy and college requirements alongside your certificate date.
