Mens Health Telehealth Consultation

Mens health telehealth is a consultation with a registered nurse practitioner, by phone about a concern you would otherwise take to a clinic. In Australia that includes almost everything men actually delay seeing someone about: erectile difficulty, persistent fatigue, changes in urinary habit, thinning hair, blood pressure, cholesterol, weight, sleep and mood. What it does not include is anything that needs hands-on examination or imaging, and this page is explicit about where that line sits.

The reason telehealth for mens health matters more than telehealth in most other categories is delay. Australian men see a telehealth practitioner less often than women do, present later, and are considerably more likely to describe a symptom as something to keep an eye on rather than something to have looked at. The barrier is rarely the cost of the appointment. It is the two weeks until it happens, the drive, the reception desk, and the conversation being had in a room with a door someone else might open. Removing those four things removes most of the reason for waiting.

At Intouch Healthcare every consultation is with an AHPRA registered Australian nurse practitioner. Nurse practitioners are registered health practitioners with authority to assess, diagnose, prescribe and issue referrals in their own right. They hold a clinical master’s degree, practise at an advanced level, and are listed on the same public register as every doctor in the country. A consultation is a flat $49.95, seven days a week between 8am and 10pm, from anywhere in Australia.

The Concerns Men Ask Us About Most

Four concerns account for most of the men's telehealth consultations we take. Here is what telehealth can do about each, and where it stops.

Sexual Health And Erectile Concerns

Erectile difficulty is common, it becomes more common with age, and it is frequently the first outward sign of something else going on. Cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, low testosterone, medication side effects, alcohol, sleep and stress all present this way. That is why a proper consultation starts with your history and your other symptoms rather than with a prescription pad. Your practitioner will talk through what has changed and over what period, review your current medications, and where it is appropriate arrange blood tests. Prescription treatment options are available where the assessment supports them, and where it does not, you will be told what to look at instead. We also arrange STI testing through a pathology request, with no examination required.

Fatigue, Low Mood And Testosterone

Tiredness that does not lift is the most common thing men bring us and the most commonly misattributed. Low testosterone is one possible cause and it is not the most likely one. Iron deficiency, thyroid dysfunction, undiagnosed diabetes, sleep apnoea, depression and simple sleep debt all produce the same presentation, and several of them are straightforward to identify with a blood test. Your practitioner can arrange a pathology request covering the relevant panel, discuss the results with you, and refer you on where the results call for it. What we will not do is treat a testosterone level in isolation, because a single number without the clinical picture around it is not a diagnosis.

Prostate And Urinary Symptoms

Getting up two or three times a night, a stream that starts slowly, urgency, or the sense that the bladder has not fully emptied are all worth raising and most often turn out to relate to benign prostatic enlargement, which is extremely common with age. They can also have other causes, which is exactly why they are worth raising rather than tolerating. A telehealth consultation is a legitimate first step: your practitioner can take the history, arrange the relevant blood tests including PSA where it is indicated, and refer you to a urologist where that is the right next move. What telehealth cannot do is perform a physical examination, so where one is needed you will be told plainly and directed to it.

Hair Loss

Male pattern hair loss is the usual explanation for gradual thinning at the temples and crown, and it responds better to earlier treatment than later. Sudden hair loss, patchy loss or loss with scalp changes is a different matter and needs assessment rather than a script. Your practitioner will take a history, ask about family pattern, timing and any recent illness or stress, and where the picture fits, discuss prescription and non-prescription options and what each realistically achieves. Nobody will tell you a treatment reverses hair loss, because that is not what the evidence supports.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mens Health Consults

Is a mens health telehealth consultation confidential?

Yes. Your consultation is between you and your practitioner, held under the same confidentiality obligations that apply in any clinic. Nothing is disclosed to your employer, family or insurer without your consent, and records are held on Australian servers under Australian privacy law

Can I get a blood test for testosterone through telehealth?

Yes, where your practitioner assesses it as appropriate. They will take a history first, because persistent fatigue has several common causes besides low testosterone, and the pathology request will usually cover the relevant panel rather than a single hormone. You take the request to any collection centre and your practitioner discusses the results with you.

Can a nurse practitioner prescribe for mens health concerns?

Yes. Nurse practitioners are registered health practitioners with prescribing authority in their own right. What is prescribed depends entirely on the clinical assessment. Schedule 8 medicines and some Schedule 4 medicines are not prescribed by telehealth and should be managed by a practitioner who sees you in person.

What does a consultation cost?

Our standard men’s health consultation is a flat $49.95, the same price seven days a week with no after hours loading and no booking fee.

Do I need a Medicare card?

No. Our service is private and does not depend on Medicare, so it is available to visa holders, international students and visitors as well as residents. Medicare telehealth rebates generally require a face to face consultation with the same practice in the previous twelve months, which no fully online service can meet.

Can erectile difficulty really be assessed over the phone?

The assessment can, and it is the assessment that matters most. Erectile difficulty is often the first sign of a cardiovascular, metabolic or medication related issue, so the history, your other symptoms and your current medications carry more diagnostic weight than an examination would. Where examination or imaging is needed, your practitioner will tell you and refer you.

Will my medical certificate say what the consultation was about?

No. A certificate states the dates you were unfit for work or study and nothing further. Your employer is entitled to know that a practitioner assessed you, not what was discussed.

Can I get an STI test without an examination?

Yes in most cases. Your practitioner can issue a pathology request for an STI screen, which is usually a blood test and a urine sample taken at a collection centre. Where symptoms suggest an examination is needed, you will be referred for one.

What is not suitable for a telehealth consultation?

Anything requiring physical examination or imaging, and anything urgent. Chest pain, severe abdominal pain, testicular pain or swelling, difficulty breathing, or any sudden severe symptom needs in person care. In an emergency call 000.

How quickly can I speak to someone?

We operate seven days a week from 8am to 10pm, including public holidays. Most consultations are completed the same day, and your script, referral or certificate is sent within minutes of the call ending. Requests received after 10pm are picked up the following morning.
